Artist Statement
I have always studied patterns and balances in nature and classical music. The experience of wilderness and music, not only the observation of them, is always present in my work. The visceral impact of the American West has shaped my orientation to line and space over decades. I am fascinated by the tension and rest that exists in these landscape forms. Why do we consider them strong, beautiful, peaceful or disturbing? Color choices in my work express my emotional response to this experience. The harmonies of classical music, even discordant ones, influence the dynamic movement.
I strive to create paintings that are complex, yet simple. I believe that this interplay between chaos and order, when in balance, creates symmetry whether it is in nature, music or art. Why does the human brain recognize certain juxtapositions as "Right"? Developing a painting, for me, is the uncovering of an already completed puzzle. Through intuitive risk-taking, interspersed with thoughtful analysis, I assemble order that holds--but just barely. That's where the fun is. To keep uncovering the endless connections between control and free-falling--both are necessary. Hopefully the resulting balance is alive.
